Church Denominations in Nepal

Many Nepali congregations are independent, or belong to a local network rather than an international denomination. A church may describe itself simply as a Nepali Christian church, take a name from its neighbourhood, and hold beliefs and a style of worship that a visitor would recognise as both evangelical and charismatic — regardless of what is written above the door.

These pages explain what each tradition emphasises and what you would actually notice walking into one, so you can work out what you are looking for. The directory does not yet record each church’s denomination, so to confirm where a particular congregation stands, check its own website or contact it directly.

• Baptist Churches in Nepal

  Baptist churches baptise adult believers by full immersion and govern themselves locally without a bishop or synod — a pattern common across Nepal, though relatively few Nepali churches actually carry the Baptist name.

• Catholic Churches in Nepal

  The Catholic Church has a long-established presence in Nepal, organised as an apostolic vicariate, with parishes celebrating Mass in Nepali and a network of schools that many Nepalis know far better than they know the church itself.

• Pentecostal Churches in Nepal

  Pentecostal churches emphasise the present work of the Holy Spirit — healing prayer, prophecy, speaking in tongues and long, expressive sung worship — and that style is so widespread in Nepal that you will meet it in many churches that would never call themselves Pentecostal.

• Evangelical Churches in Nepal

  Evangelical describes a set of emphases rather than a denomination — personal conversion, the authority of the Bible, the cross, and a duty to tell others — and it fits a very large share of Nepali churches, including many that also worship in a Pentecostal style.
